Homebound trails sessions
It had been nine months since I was last here. As I wheeled my bike out of Exeter St Davids train station into the sun I anticipated one thing for the following two and a bit weeks: trails. Oh and ticking off a list of getabmx related activities. Unknown to me at the time, the days of dust and BBQs would be limited and a return to the winter practice of indoor skatepark ventures was just around the corner.
The moment I walked through the door of my mothers house the phone rang with getabmx rider, trails boss and funny man Rob Newman on the other end. K-hole that evening, Moos trails the next day, perfect.

Having followed the Moos trails scene for a number of years and featuring the spot on the site, I was excited about finally paying a visit. On the drive up I listened to Dirt Wars founder Cliff rant about certain pro and well known riders and his comical impressions of the Mother land. After a visit to the Stares residence and an introduction to the numerous guns and knives sprawled around their home we met the other locals and rolled our bikes through the woods. We were shown round the trails before Danny Pace proved he could flip anything, from a BMX to Rob Newman’s bike with 23” bars, straight off, with no warm up.
It took me a while to get familiar with the trails and reframe from jumping past landings but Rob, being Rob, rode everything with no trouble until he hit a jump that unknown to him at the time, he Guinea pigged. A nose dive to flat was the outcome and a bruised thigh, bent wheel and twisted fork was the result. He was lucky to walk away relatively unharmed. I learnt that double whips on a trick jump are more fashionable than flowing through a set of trails but fortunately Newman (after I trued his wheel) and local trails boss Ashley Stares were up for doing a few trains for the camera. Newman then decided he was too broken to ride and it was time to leave. After an incredibly longer than necessary route back to the car (the downhill section made up for it though) we made the long journey back to Devon.

Later that week the sun kept its hat on and the K-hole sessions were plentiful, mixed up with a few rides at my old local spot, JLC. Simpson got involved with the SLR over a few sessions and I got an afternoons worth of footage with the help of Will Peters and Derek Pincett and his pick up truck for some in motion train clips as seen in the film Black and White. What you don’t see are the shady ill-planned runs that nearly ended badly, but it was worth it. The plan was to film the bottom half of the trails another day and shoot some footage at JLC, but the weather had other ideas.

When the rain came down at JLC, I jumped in the car with Newman and we decided to go to Haldon forest, cafe side, to ride the downhill and feeride tracks on our bicycle motor-cross bikes. We met up with Jonathan Williams and started our decent. That ride terrified me. I hadn’t ridden here before and not knowing what was round every corner led to some harry situations due to the limitations of trying to slow down on steep slopes with one brake. This of course just brought more excitement to the ride until the rain became heavy.

With the season seemingly changing from Summer to Winter from one week to the next, riding plans changed to scoping out which indoor skateparks would be worth the headache of attempting to ride during half term. I sent a text to Jay Cowley for his suggestions and he responded with a phone call to say that the guys from Diamondback were around for a few days to film so they had arranged some private sessions for the occasion. Myself and Rob Newman were invited so the dread of riding scooter ridden skateparks vanished. Over those days we rode Bridport, The Barn and the new ramp set up at the Pro Cycle Centre in Newton Abbot. Recently signed Ollie Palmer was on the trip and proved why he was worthy of a place on the Diamondback pro team. He shuts down any park he rides in, simple as that. I partly regret not shooting any clips as Jay and Ollie are on another level, but on the other hand I was too busy riding, so the memories suffice.

Before my time in Exeter was up the annual local Ride to Glory event was on. I shot some clips for an edit during the opening evening at Flowerpot skatepark and followed Jamie Skinner and his RTG team on a few challenges. It would have been great to be able to stick around for the whole weekend but it was cool to witness some of the craziness that went down.
So overall, my visit hadn’t gone to plan. As a result of the weather, and in part weak organisation on my part, I didn’t manage to get a lot of the site content I was hoping for. Unfortunately the Bogey trails jam had to be postponed twice due to the abysmal weather, I hadn’t done a big interview and a couple of video projects were called off. However on the flip side the crap weather meant that I got to ride in places I wouldn’t have otherwise ridden. You’ll just have to wait a little longer for that content.
